Another Tuesday of Spinning tonight.

I got some good rest yesterday/last night and it felt good. I fell asleep around 8:30, woke up just after 10pm. I got out of my clothes and crawled under the covers for another good 6 hrs of restful sleep. There's a radio in the headboard of my bed and I have a nasty habit of turning it on very lightly and falling asleep to the "soothing" sounds of ESPN Sports Radio. While I fall asleep this way I think it takes longer to fall asleep because I get caught up in the talk and I also think my sleep is not nearly is good. As if there is something subconsciously going on while I sleep that prevents a good, restful night.

The times that I do leave the radio off I feel better in the morning. If I do turn the radio on maybe I should try KFUO instead.

News Item of the Day: Johan Museeuw, whose use of doping products in 2003 was recently established by a Belgian public prosecutor still maintains his innocence. At the moment, the 'Lion of Flanders' refuses to answer any questions from the media about the allegations made against him in the Landuyt case, but might start a public debate at a time of his choice.

"I don't want to and cannot talk about the content of the court's files," he explained. "I know that I haven't done anything wrong and have nothing to hide. If this goes on, I'll open up a debate at the right moment, and at the right place to defend myself. But I cannot do this now."

Museeuw, who won Paris-Roubaix three times, also feels mistreated by the media. "What is the meaning of all these so-called revelations of the last few days - which to me, contain nothing new - in comparison to what has been reported before?" he asked. "Do you want to create a second Pantani in this country? It could just be too much for me too. At the moment, I feel the media treats me worse than Marc Dutroux," referring to a convicted serial child abuser and murderer, whose case plunged Belgium in a deep social and political crisis in the late nineties.

Today is my typical rest day but even so I wouldn't have ridden today. I'm tired. That's what I get for staying up too late Friday and Saturday night and then getting up early both days. I normally get about 6 hrs a night, but five hours Friday night followed up by four Saturday night with a good ride a few hours later and I'm fatigued.

News Item of the Day: SILVER SPRING, United States (AFP) - Six-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong will make up his mind whether he competes in this year's renewal at the end of April. However 33-year-old Armstrong added that under the terms of his contract with new sponsors Discovery Channel he would have to take part in either this year's race or the one in 2006. "The deal was I was going to do the tour in 2005 or 2006," said the Texan. Armstrong will race in the one day classics in April before making up his mind. "That would be a good time to adjust," he commented. "At the moment I cannot say if I will be able to take part. "We are not ruling anything out, but we will see at the time."

Armstrong, though, said that his decision would not be based on his sometimes fractious relations with the French public, in fact he claimed he was liked by the majority of them. "I think this perception between myself and the entire French public is absolutely incorrect. "The majority of people are supporting me on the side of the road, a few say nasty things ... I am fine with that."

Armstrong added that he would like to compete in the Tour of Flanders from March 4-6, the Liege-Bastogne-Liege on April 24, The Fleche-Wallon and perhaps the Amstel Gold Cup on April 17. He is also hoping to take part in the Tour of Italy or the Tour of Spain.

Columbia IL today with Ted, Justin and Patrick. Chilly weather to start with the temperature around freezing and a stiff headwind heading south to Maeystown. I was looking at a map a couple days ago and decided to take a little different route today. Instead of dropping down to the B Rd, we stayed on Levee Rd to A Rd which turns into Levee again and then stayed on Levee until making a left on Outlet Rd. This is a little longer route but it eliminated two of the three railroad crossing we normally pass.

Justin and I pushed it pretty good into the wind, eventually dropping Ted and Patrick unintentionally. We enjoyed some tasty bread at the Sweet Shoppe in Maeystown before heading back and enjoying a good tailwind. Justin went off and did his own thing again while I stayed with Ted and Patrick. It was a pleasant trip back. I love a tailwind. Patrick started to bonk on the stretch along 255 and officially hit the wall when we turned into the wind for the last little bit on Bluff Rd. He hung on though and struggled in.

63 miles according to Ted with a ride time of just over three and a half hours. Not real quick but my legs were stiff afterward. A nice workout.

News Item of the Day: Dutch track rider Leontien van Moorsel finished her professional cycling career on Saturday evening at the Rotterdam Six day. In front of 8,000 spectators, Van Moorsel gave her last show in the 'Ahoy' velodrome and thanked all the people that supported her, especially her parents and her closest family members.

Van Moorsel called it a career as the evening was filled with a speech from the NOCNSF president Erica Terpstra and battles between the best track riders against Erik Dekker, Michael Boogerd and Max van Heeswijk. However, Leontien will stay involved in cycling in the future as she will coach cycling talents together with her husband Michael Zijlaard.

Viewpoint: Too bad Leontien lost a few years with weight issues. A great talent that achieved much in her career. And a pretty hot babe too.

When I woke up the roads were not so bad. Just wet and temperatures of 28. I rode out to Kirkwood so if no one else showed up and the roads were not good after all I would at least get some riding done.

The roads were good the whole way out but as I feared no one else showed up. Chickens! I waited around for 15 minutes and in that time managed to get chilled a little. That wasn't so bad but my gloves seemed to lose all warmth. The tips of my fingers, especially on the right hand, literally hurt.

I was going to get in a few extra miles by going down Marshall and through Fenton but there were signs at the top of Marshall saying the road was flooded. That crushed any ambition I had for riding and just headed home the normal way. My hands made the ride home pretty much unbearable. My gloves aren't the warmest but I don't know why they got so cold. I've ridden on colder days before. I really need to buy some nice warm gloves.

In summary, I got in a little more than an hour's worth of pretty worthless riding. The trainer would have been much more beneficial today. I'll tell myself the conditions made me tougher in some suffering type of way.

News Item of the Day: Lance Armstrong has scored a significant victory in his libel battle against The Sunday Times and its chief sports writer David Walsh.

A judge in London's high court has struck out the newspaper's defence in its entirety after the six-times Tour de France winner sued them for libel. The suit was prompted by an article last June, bylined Alan English, repeating allegations made in a book LA Confidentiel: The Secrets of Lance Armstrong which Walsh co-authored but was published only in France. The newspaper had sought to argue that the article was true. They could now face a six-figure compensation payout to the American. Mr Justice Eady said he considered the tone of the article to be "sensational" and to "stir things up".

The book calls on 52 witnesses, whose evidence, as Walsh admitted when the book was published, is "circumstantial". Armstrong has repeatedly denied allegations that he has taken performance-enhancing drugs. Upon publication of the book and article, the Tour de France winner mobilised legal teams in London and Paris. News International has removed the article from its online archive.

Armstrong is also involved in a bitter court case in his native Texas, having sued his former personal assistant, Mike Anderson. Anderson claimed he wanted $500,000 and other benefits under an employment contract. Now Anderson has counter-sued for an unspecified amount, accusing Armstrong of fraud, breach of contract and causing him severe emotional distress.

The weathermen blew another forecast today. It never warmed up as much as they expected and now a small front is moving through the region this evening and is expected to dump a couple inches of snow with some sleet. If the roads are crap tomorrow morning I'll be on the trainer.

News Item of the Day: Former Belgian champion Johan Museeuw doped in the season 2003 with EPO and Aranesp. This comes from determinations of the law, from which Belgian media quoted on Friday evening. The Flemish TV network VRT and the daily paper De Morgen had view of official reports of the public prosecutor's office of Kortrijk. The Ermittler(?) intercepted in particular SMS text messages, which the accused doping handler animal physician José Landuyt exchanged with Museeuw. Landuyt gave Museeuw pieces of advice for income for the forbidden doping substances. "from the heard SMS and faxes, the questionings and the expressions of Landuyt and other people it comes out that Johan Museeuw took Aranesp and EPO with security", is called it in the report of the public prosecutor's office Kortrijk. Johan Museeuw was banned October 8th by the Belgian cycle racing federation for two years because of its entangling into the "veterinary surgeon affair" around the presumed hormone black market operator Landuyt. The hearing before the federation had taken place in private at the request of Museeuw.

The SMS intercepted by the Ermittlern is very informative and gives deep views. For instance, veterinary surgeon José Landuyt sent a SMS on July 7, 2003 to Museeuw with the text: "you should take now 80 to 100 wasps, then July 9 between 40 and 60. Then you are completely clean starting from the July 19" In the code of Landuyt and Museeuw "wasp" meant a unit of the product Aranesp, which works similarly as the more well-known doping hormone EPO. On July 26, 2003, Museeuw sent an SMS to Landuyt, in which he called excitedly: "I have 52!" With it Museeuw meant his hematocrit was over the threshold of 50 per cent. But the veterinarian knew how to help: "take salt and drink much!", it answered. Museeuw, the best Classics rider in the last ten years, ended his career this past spring at the age of 38. Few months later now a large shadow falls on the shining career of the "Lion of Flanders". Museeuw could threaten legal proceedings. His compatriot Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said this past December "his palmares remains, because he was never caught. But one can doubt the value of his victories".

Viewpoint: Its bad enough when a cyclist fails a doping test. You always hold out hope that in some remote way, the test might be wrong (e.g. Hamilton) but when they have calls and messages implicating yourself it really drives a stake into any argument. Alas, another mythical cycling figure falls.

Rode the trainer tonight for 1hr 10min. I did a series of different intervals. Five 2 minute intervals, two 5 minute intervals and then five 1 minute intervals. In order to establish some type of baseline, I did all them in my 53x17 and can then compare future rides to this one.

News Item of the Day: In an exclusive NOS-TV interview with Dutch journalist Mart Smeets, Lance Armstrong has given more clues as to his participation in the 2005 Tour de France.

"I don't want to go back," he said when asked if he was to return to the streets of France in July 2005. "I don't know which realisation is greater - do I not want to go back or do I want to do other things? And there are other things that I want to do in cycling." As examples, Armstrong stated the Flemish Classics as the Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold race, which he described as the race "with 300 million turns", Flèche Wallonne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège or even Paris-Roubaix. "I feel an urgent need to do those races," he said.

Asked if he could imagine the Giro d'Italia or the Vuelta a España on his racing schedule for the coming season, he clearly declined. "I cannot do the Giro because they are trying to prosecute me for sports fraud [referring to his ongoing case involving Filippo Simeoni - ed.], so I'm not going to present myself in that country and give them the photo opportunity that they're dying for."

As for the Vuelta, "The problem is: I do think the Giro is bigger than the Vuelta. The big days, in terms of the people, the emotion, the intensity on the roadside, are the Angliru and the Mortirolo - and the Giro is bigger," he explained. Other competitions he was keeping in mind were the World Championships in Madrid, as well as the hour record on track.

Although the interview was broadcast on January 5, 2005, it took place in November 2004 and therefore does not include any new statements. The Discovery Channel team presentation will be held in Silver Spring, Maryland, on January 10, 2005, where the secret of Armstrong's return to the Tour de France might be lifted.

Viewpoint: Lance is putting a good act if he plans on doing the Tour. I still wouldn't rule it out though. The new Team Discovery website has "Road to the Tour" videos and the new jersey has the pretentious yellow armband on the left sleeve. Not sure what to believe. Is he laying down a bluff. I wouldn't put it past Lance to take a home a Spring Classic and a Tour win plus an hour record in one year to shut up some of his critics.

What America needs right now, legendary TV anchor Walter Cronkite said Thursday, is a new election -- and, he warned a laughing press conference full of reporters, he wasn't kidding.

''That's not entirely a joke,'' Cronkite said solemnly, arguing that the Bush administration has spent itself into ruin while embroiling the country in a war that will eventually make public revulsion to the war in Vietnam look ``like peanuts.''

''I think you journalists today have a great four years ahead of you,'' Cronkite observed dryly. ``It's going to be a great story to cover.''..........

On Thursday, he whacked away at the Bush administration even harder, accusing it of destroying the nation's infrastructure and wrecking its education system to the point that American democracy itself is in danger.

''You want to get down to the nub of how this democracy is going to defend itself,'' Cronkite said. ``We've got to have an intelligent electorate and we're not going to have it because our education system is in a shambles right now.''........

''I'm not going to comment on the Dan Rather matter until the investigators come up with their report,'' said Cronkite. ``I've had great difficulty keeping my lips buttoned, but so far I've made it.''

A news story tonight stated that Britney Spears hurt her knee while performing last night. She came back on stage in a robe and told her fans the show was over. What does this tell me? She cannot depend on her singing to carry a show. A talented singers voice is not affected by a bad knee. Instead she must rely on dancing and theatrics to be any good. Sadly, this is true of the majority the "stars" today. All flash, no substance.

Pete Rose comes out with this "revelation" today that he actually did bet on baseball. Who would have ever guessed? Now we pundits and experts speculating whether he should now be allowed back into the game and possibly into the Hall of Fame. What kind of screwy logic is that? An admission of guilt should cement his banishment from the game. At least before there was some minute amount of doubt about the betting allegations. Is betting on the game not acceptable behavior. Has not Joe Jackson been banished from baseball for 84 years when there is serious doubt that he was involved in the Black Sox scandal? If I were commisioner Pete Rose would have just written his own "death" sentence.

[STRONG]The McNabb Suck-o-Meter[/STRONG]

The recent controversy created by Rush Limbaugh over Donovan McNabb brought to mind the fact that I have felt for several years that McNabb is over-rated as a quarterback. Not necessarily because the media wished for a black QB's success as Rush proposed. I have never been able to pinpoint a specific reason but he does seem to get more credit than he deserves based on his performance.

It's not just the media either that give him glowing praise. Players insist he is one of the best QB's too. Why? Am I imagining things? What do the numbers show? What is it that so many seem to value in his performances. Often they quote that he has gone to the Pro Bowl the past two years. He has led his team to the NFC Championship game. They say, how could a bad QB do that? The only concession that they would make was that his first two games this year were poor.

I have decided to examine his performances compared to other QB's. Admittedly, not everything can be measured by stats alone and some statistics will be difficult to find but lets see what I can put together. Initially, I will begin with just basic statistics.

My first step in this examination was to look at week 5 of the current (2003) season. The week following Rush's comments on McNabb. How did McNabb fare?

16 for 30 (53.3%) for 157 yards, 9.8 yards/attempt, 1 TD, 2 INT.
League average: 57.95%, 219 yards, 11.6 yards/attempt, 1 TD, 1 INT

Did the Eagles win? Yes. Did they win because of McNabb? Not likely.

Of the 28 quarterbacks that played Sunday, McNabb was 19th best in completion percentage. He was 22nd in passing yards. 20th in yards per attempt.

The weather did get a little cooler today. After yesterdays record-breaking 104 its dropped down to 92. Break out the jackets! Not much else happened today. It's Friday, and uneventful Fridays are not such a bad way to end the week.

Just watched a football game on TV tonight. I had no idea the Falcons changed their jerseys until last week. Ugly uniformns. Better than the Buffalo Bills but Atlanta has the 2nd ugliest.

Years ago I used to find the Little League World Series a minor annoyance. The championship game would be on TV and that was all. It was boring television but it was easy to ignore. Last year though ESPN starting covering many of the qualifying games. Its on the afternoon, its on at night. It seems like it is always on. And the championship game, at least last year, is on primetime network television. Why? It's a bunch of 13 or 14 yr olds playing mini baseball. What is the attraction? Superior play? No. I guess there is supposed to be some type of cuteness factor that just passes me by. Baseball itself is pretty boring. Why torture the American public with bad baseball played by pubescent boys. Sadly, there is always the chance that the public actually wants to watch this. After all the WNBA somehow finds it way on to TV.

The weather has been blazing hot here the last week. Mid 90's with high humidity. Yesterday was 97 with 70% humidity. This morning it was 83 when I left for work at 5:30 in the morning. The high humidity remains. The weather is supposed to break tonight and be a nice weekend, thank goodness. It will be some HOT training tonight. Seeing "C" is the main reason I am going otherwise I would likely wait until later in the evening when it might be slightly cooler.

February 17, 2003
One week to go before this year’s road racing season begins with the traditional Froze Toes race in Columbia, MO. This past weekend was very wintry. Freezing rain started Saturday evening, followed by sleet and then about 3 inches of snow Sunday. While it would be a memorable race, I do not care to have those conditions this coming Sunday. This week is supposed to be nicer in comparison. Rain is forecast for 2 or 3 days but the temperature is supposed to be in the 40’s and maybe even the low 50’s on a couple days. With any luck, the weather will be bearable.

So I’m at Spinning last night and people are being asked after class whether they will be getting something to eat after class. C says that she won’t be going. Someone kidded her and asked whether she had a hot date, to which C chuckled and said “Yeah, me have a hot date”

Granted, I’ve never told her just how much I like her but certainly she must know that I do. That kind of thing is what makes me wonder if she has any feeling toward me and then she’ll do some little thing and completely change my mind.

Did the team ride Sunday. Rode pretty well, considering I’ve been sick. Once again though, the left knee particularly started hurting in the last part of the ride and all night it hurt when trying to bend it. I didn’t have this problem before last Saturday. Maybe its IT band problems flaring up again. Guess I’ll start with the stretching exercises again on a daily basis.

Last night I didn’t take any NyQuil and woke up no worse for wear. Still had some nasal congestion to clear out but I think the cold might be a bit better. Still congested today though and have a headache right now.

C emailed, wishing me a Happy New Year. Sounded like she had a real good time back in CO for Christmas. I’ll be happy to see her again. Its been, what... since Dec 17th.

It snowed about 4 inches last night and is supposed to do another inch or so today. Looking out the window here it work makes for a nice view with the snow sitting heavily on the trees and evergreens. Its turning out to be a pretty snowy year. We are probably close to our yearly average already and places just south (45 min) of here are WAY over average. We've just missed some heavy snows.

Feeling a little better today. Earlier I had a splitting headache from the sinuses. Popped a couple aspirin 2 hrs ago and feel pretty good right now. I'd say I feel about 75%

Hooters Restaurant Owner Buys Airline

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The owner of the Hooters restaurant chain, dashed in an earlier attempt to buy an airline, has acquired a small North Carolina carrier with hopes of launching Hooters Air.

Hooters of America Inc. chairman Robert H. Brooks said Thursday he had bought Pace Airlines, a division of Piedmont Hawthorne Aviation.

The airline has 17 Boeing jets and 350 employees, most based near Piedmont's headquarters in Winston-Salem, N.C. Pace specializes in corporate shuttles and business jets, catering to sports teams, VIP business travelers and vacation charters.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"We would hope to stay in Winston-Salem, pending the outcome of negotiations," Darrell Richardson, president and chief executive of Pace, told the Winston-Salem Journal.

Messages left with Pace Airlines and Hooters of America by The Associated Press were not immediately returned Thursday.

In a news release, Brooks said he plans to establish a charter air service called Hooters Air and would provide leisure travel service for the golf industry to Myrtle Beach, S.C. Brooks also has a home there.

In September, bankrupt Vanguard Airlines Inc. rejected Brooks' offer to buy the assets of the failed Kansas City, Mo. company.

"While things did not work out with Vanguard, I learned through my due diligence efforts that the charter service segment is a healthier business arena and much better suited for extending the Hooters brand," Brooks said.

Hooters was founded in 1983, and Brooks and a group of Atlanta investors bought expansion and franchise rights for the chain in 1984. Brooks eventually bought majority control and became chairman in March.

Brother and Family left this morning. He was under the weather the whole time with some nasty hacking spells. There has been a couple times during the visit that his "cold" seemed to be setting in on me. With some help from aspirin whenever I started feeling it come on, I seem to have fought off the sickness so far.

The ground is still covered with snow although the roads are in pretty good condition. Good enough that I rode to Jefferson Barracks for some slopping around in the snow. I never realized how tough snow can be to cut through. It felt like I was pushing a BIG gear instead of the 36x17 or so that I was in.

Christmas Eve. In the weeks leading up it was agreed that there would be no exchanging of gifts between my brothers family, me and our parents. Of course my parents always get something anyway but I thought the agreement held with my brother. So whats under the tree? A present from him. And one from one of his daughters. Good Grief. I had to get a gift still for Dad but now I'm obviously going to be making a few extra stops it seems. Nothing like last minute shit. Not only that I get off work at 2 or so, its normally a half hour drive home and we are going to a 4 o'clock mass that we will have to leave by at 3:30 at the latest. How I'm going to cram the shopping in I have no idea. AARRGGHH.

Missed the team training race Sunday because my brother was coming in to town. There was just too much to do to get ready for his arrival to justify taking time out for a meaningless race.

He and the family arrived close to 5pm. He is sick with a bad cold I guess and sounds terrible hacking up some nasty stuff. It will be a miracle if I don’t get sick from this visit.

I still need to get something for Dad for Christmas. I’m clueless though. I’d maybe get something computer related but he’s wanting to get a new computer so I’m hesitant to make any purchase dealing with the computer. Hopefully I’ll have some brainstorm in the next couple hours because I really need to get it today. We are supposed to be getting hit pretty good by snow tonight and tomorrow. It won’t be fun trying to fight snow and bad drivers on Christmas Eve.

Yet another attempt on my part to post to this thing on a semi regular basis.

Today I heard that each year 1.7 billion candy canes are made. Who is eating all these things? I will eat maybe 1 a year. And even then, have you ever eaten a candy cane at one time. If its any bigger than a couple inches long I just don’t eat the whole thing. It will take me a week to eat those 6 or 7 inch long candy canes.

I pretty much forgot about this place. Maybe I'm not the weblog type of guy. It doesnt help that my home 'puter is an old piece of crap that won't allow me to post to Blogger. Tomorrow is the Missouri State Road Race Championships. Its going to be hot (90 deg). I've done pretty well this year and I'm riding pretty well right now. If things go according to plan, I should do pretty good even though I havent finished this race the two times I raced it. We'll see how it goes. My plan is to take it easy for the first couple laps. Then on the third lap, test my legs a little on the hill and see who follows and who cant quite keep up. If a break develops I'll work it but it should come down to the last time up the hill and along the rollers up to the finish.

I remember dreams very, very rarely. I'm not even sure I do dream that much. Of course, how can you tell if you dont remember anything when you wake up. Anyway, last night I had a dream. YIKES did I have a dream. Not all the details are very clear but here is the general dream. I was at work and when in walked This is odd since I work in a locked building but nonetheless there was Julie Andrews speaking to me. Julie is pretty attractive for a 65 yr old woman but not my usual type of woman. However, in my dream, she was suddenly lying on the floor face down in a thin green dress and I was massaging her. I will try to keep the rest of the dream as clean as possible. Accidentally, my finger brushed against a certain sensitive area near her mid-section. She shuddered a bit and then not so accidentally I did it again. She mentioned how she hadnt hadn't "gotten off" in well over a year. I was surprised and when I touched her again she came right then and there. Just one little touch sent her over the edge. She let out this moan/yell and all of a sudden a nun walked up to us. The nun seemed completely oblivious as to what just happened and we pretended like everything was normal.

That was pretty much the whole dream. Bizarre. Kind of glad I dont dream more often.

Nothing has been posted for a while because I've been pretty busy. Plus I got this blogger thing just to see what it was all about and had no real idea as to what to to with it. Thats still the case. So for now I think I'll play around with the template a little because its just pretty ugly. And if I should happen to think of something brilliant to do with this blog I might actually start posting regularly.
